Ash Wednesday

Brrr! This week started out with an amazing day full of sunshine and warm weather, and has turned into winter once again! Oh, Missouri weather! I am very much looking forward to spring.

Not only is this week full off classes like usual, but also celebration and rememberance as well! This Tuesday was Mardi Gras, with Rockhurst celebrating miles away from the French Quarter in its own way. My roommate Juia Saucedo and I made time in our schedules to go to the annual R.A.K.E.R.S. Mardi Gras party hosted in the party barn. It was a fun time, with good music, company and wonderful Jumbalaya! Of course, sice Mardi Gras was yesterday, that means today was Ash Wednesday. There were masses offered at Rockhurst's Massman chapel, and across the street at St. Francis Xavier church. I find Rockhurst affiliation with faith very interesting, and as I am a practicing Catholic, convenient and enjoyable as well. I have always been in public schools, and have never really been in an area with large amounts of Catholics, so in some ways it is a very fun and unique experience for me. But, one of the best parts is that being Catholic and faith in general are not enforced by Rockhurst. Of course, certain Jesuit traditions, such as service, are all part of the Rockhurst experience, and we are requiered to take two Christianity courses, but in general the environment at Rockhurst feels open and inviting towards religion and faith. I enjoy being able to conveniently participate in mass and special Catholic practices right here on campus, but I also enjoy being able to learn about other religions and beliefs, as well as express my own.
